Real ale is probably not the first thing you think of when you think of Thailand, but if you've had your fill of Chang, Leo and Singh, there are an ever growing number of craft breweries and brew pubs springing up all over Thailand. As with most things up and coming in Thailand, the movement usually starts in the bustling capital of Bangkok and gradually spreads from there, craft brewing seems no exception to this, but some craft brewers are plying their trade in some surprising locations.
Craft has two locations in the capital, Sukumvit soi 23 and Silom, both serving up 20+ draught beers and offering a selection of over 50 bottled beers. Craft combines, Real Ale, Great food, Live Music and Great ambience, to create an unforgettable experience when in Bangkok.
Tawandang brews up a number of it'sown German style bees under the supervision of their own German Brew master, and serve it up alongside great German fayre and live entertainment. It's a shame they don't have a resident oompah band, but you can't have everything.
Outlaw Brewing, Muang Loei
Moving on from the capital, Outlaw Brewing is situated in Muang Loei and according to a friend that recently stumbled upon the place when his bike broke down, does an outstanding Porter. Outlaw also produce a range of IPA's, Pale Ales, Stouts, you name it they do it, they even have a house ale on tap for 90 baht. Bargain! Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
The Barrels Social Beer House, Rayong
Situated on the Eastern Seaboard on inbetween Bangkok and Koh Samed, Rayong is not exactly a tourist hot spot but it does have its fair share of Ex-pats. The barrels social beer house is an Asian Bistro restaurant that also serves up an impressive range imported craft beers as well as beers from Thai craft brewers.
Bees Knees Brewpub, Koh Samui
The highly rated Bees Knees Brewpub on Koh Samui is the only brewpub on the Island. The beers on offer are all brewed on site, including, English Bitter, Wheat beer, English style Porter, and a Pilsner style Larger. Perfect when you're soaking up those island rays.
Fullmoon Brewworks, Phuket
The Fullmoon Brewworks in Phuket, offers up a range of traditional craft ales, as well as a selection of ales with a distinctly Asian twist. If you're there for St. Patrick's day, why not try the green, Pandanus leaf infused ale.
